This means we are ideally located near local amenities and to regularly provide day trips and excursions. There are many fantastic attractions available to residents that provide a full and exciting day out. Whether it’s for a spot of shopping at Union Square Shopping Mall and lunch or a visit to Aberdeen Beach, there is something for everyone.
It is important for all of our residents to keep stimulated and for our residents with dementia, we go to great lengths to create a programme that offers a wide range of engaging and inclusive activities. With all of our residents, we listen closely to how they like to spend their time so we can incorporate them into our weekly schedule, whether they take place in or outside the home.
When it comes to our residents with dementia, our team is great at including dementia friendly activities such as creating memory boxes, playing board games, and hosting musical-themed sessions. These are a great way to alleviate any negative emotions and stresses they may be feeling, and can also help to evoke memories. We have even put together our very own dementia choir, who was set up by our specialist dementia unit leader, Susan Gray. The group meet every Tuesday to sing and play instruments, and they have aptly named themselves ‘The Edelweiss Choir’ after the much-loved film ‘The Sound of Music’.
The choir has both sensory and therapeutic benefits and has seen many of our residents living with dementia be able to utilise their speech in a way they have not done for a while. The group has a positive impact on our resident’s social wellbeing as after each session, they indulge in an afternoon tea.

Through creating these bonds with our residents’ loved ones, we now benefit from a Resident’s Support Group. The group was formed early last year by a number of relatives and has since turned into regular meetings. In these meetings, a variety of topics are discussed, and the common goal is to introduce new and fun opportunities to the residents both in our care home and in the local community. For example, since the group has been formed, we have held new events and excursions organised for them, such as a Gentleman’s Rotary Club, a Women’s Guild Forum, and pen pals with local schools.
